APTA held its annual Federal Affairs Forum on March 31 – April 2, 2019 in Washington DC.  The forum was attended by Doreen Frank, PT who’s the NY Federal Affairs Liaison, Theresa Marko, PT, DPT, MS, Katie Parotte, PT, DPT and Jenna Kantor, PT.  Also attending the forum were 285 PTs/PTAs and students to meet with US Senators and Congress members.

The annual Federal Affairs Forum’s purpose is to advocate for the profession of physical therapy and patients.  Members walked away from the forum with a rewarding experience that motivates them to establish a relationship with members of Congress who need information on the many issues affecting physical therapists and physical therapist assistants, and the people they serve such as: reducing the many barriers to easy access to physical therapy, eliminating high co-payments, administrative burdens, restricted visits, referral for profit, cuts to IDEA and Medicare/Medicaid, telehealth and more.

Discussions with members of Congress focused on how physical therapy needs to be the first choice for pain relief so that the number of people turning to opioids can be reduced.  Adding physical therapists to the National Health Care Service Corps so that loan forgiveness is offered to those in shortage areas so those patients have access to physical therapy was discussed at length.  There are numerous issues, all of which the team at APTA's Government Affairs Department helps to prioritize and summarize in order to make it easy for us to communicate with our representatives.

If you are looking for ways to engage with your member of Congress, try inviting them to your school or practice. Visiting your legislators in their home District Office is also very effective. If you’d like to learn how to arrange a meeting, Doreen has offered to help. She can be reached at:

A great way to find out what’s happening is to download the PTAction app.  It provides comprehensive information on legislative issues at both the federal and state levels.  On the app you can sign up to on the PT Team, and you will receive alerts regarding how to take action as bills are introduced.  The app is available at the Apple Store and Google Play.

"I hope next year New York will have more than 4 members at the Federal Affairs Forum" said Doreen Frank, PT.  Please join Doreen at the 2020 forum. You will be glad you did!
