May is recognized as National Arthritis Awareness Month, and is the perfect time for the NYPTA to help spread the importance of physical activity in managing the effects of arthritis.

It is a common misconception that exercise can make arthritis worse.  In reality, moderate physical activity is proven to help relieve arthritis symptoms by improving mobility, mood, and quality of life. Evidence-based physical activity programs, like Enhance®Fitness, are recognized at the state and national level as safe ways for older adults, with or without arthritis, to get active.

Enhance®Fitness is an evidence-based group exercise program, geared towards older adults, that combines different types of low-impact physical activity to help improve or maintain physical function.  Components of Enhance®Fitness, which can be adapted to participants’ abilities, include:

·         Warm-up (5 – 8 minutes)

·         Cardiovascular workout (20 minutes)

·         Resistance strength training (20 minutes)

·         Flexibility (8 – 10 minutes)

·         Cool-down (3 – 5 minutes)

·         Balance exercises

Recommending physical activity programs to patients with arthritis is a great way to extend the benefits of physical therapy after treatment is complete.
