The Leadership Committee

The purpose of the Leadership Committee is to encourage new and continued leadership involvement on the District and Chapter levels. It is accountable to the Board of Directors, and consists of the chair, and two additional members. The vice president is an ex-officio member of the committee. The chair is appointed by the Executive Committee.

Leadership Development Workshop

The Leadership Committee is offering a Leadership Development Workshop (LDW) from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 11th, 2018, paired with attendance at the Delegate Forum Friday night and Delegate Assembly on Saturday, May 12th, 2018. Each district will be able to send one chapter funded participant (PT, PTA or Student) or the financial equivalent. Hotel room (1/2 room for Friday evening) and travel expenses for the funded participant would be covered by the Chapter. Others are encouraged to attend but they would need to be funded by the district or individual.


The workshop usually covers an overview of the APTA, NYPTA, and Leadership Committee activities. The attendees will sit in the gallery at the NYPTA Board of Director’s meeting and experience the decision making process first hand. The attendees will also have the opportunity to meet with the members of the Board. Additionally, a Mock Delegate Assembly is enacted during the LDW.


The 2018 Leadership Development Workshop will offer 4.25 CEHs.


All participants must attend both the Leadership Workshop on Friday and the Delegate Assembly on Saturday , in order to receive these credit hours. There is no cost to attend, but you MUST register in advance.

The event will take place at the Holiday Inn Hotel, in Saratoga Springs, NY.

Directors Intern Program

At its 2010 spring meeting, the New York Physical Therapy Association (NYPTA) Board of Directors (BOD) approved a new program that may be of interest to program directors and their students.  In an effort to teach more upcoming NYPTA members about the organization and its operations, a program titled, “Director’s Interns” was piloted in 2010-2011 (and will be continued in 2012 and beyond).  Each PT and PTA program in New York is invited to send one student (Director’s Intern) (over a two-year period) who meets the criteria below to a BOD meeting.  One Director from the BOD will be assigned to each student to mentor throughout the process of preparing for and attending a NYPTA BOD meeting, as well as evaluating the experience. 
Criteria for participation by the student. 
  1. The Directors’ Intern is a Student APTA member.
  2. The intern agrees to commit the time to adequately prepare for the BOD meeting, including reviewing all pertinent documents and corresponding with the assigned Director.
  3. The intern agrees to present information about the experience to his/her educational program, as determined appropriate by the Program Director.
  4. The intern agrees to participate in an evaluation of the pilot project, most likely by Survey Monkey and/or interview.
It is our sincere hope that this one-on-one mentoring will be an exciting and rewarding experience for the Director’s Intern, the Director/Mentor, and the organization.
The procedure is outlined below:
  1. Directors' Interns will be assigned to a director one month prior to the BOD meeting.

  2. Upon assignment the director will email the Intern within one week of receiving notification.

  3. Included in the email will be introductions of the Director, his or her role in the NYPTA, a general description of the BOD meeting, and a request for any questions the Intern may have.

  4. If no further email communication has occurred, one week prior to the BOD meeting the Director will email the Intern to verify that he or she has no further questions or concerns.

  5. At the BOD meeting the Director’s Intern Program will run as previously determined.

  6. By one week following the meeting the Director will email the Intern to touch base regarding any further questions, concerns, or interests.

  7. At one month following the meeting the Director will email the Intern and inform them that any further mentoring requests he or she may have may be addressed through contact with the Leadership Committee and provide the Intern with the email addresses of the Leadership Committee Members.  If the Director chooses to stay on acting as a mentor he or she may also include this in the follow up email correspondence.

The Leadership Development Wordshop was developed to help members understand how the NYPTA works.  The workshop gives an overview of the APTA, NYPTA and Leadership Committee activities. The attendees will sit in the Gallery at the NYPTA Board of Directors’ (BoD)meeting and experience the decision making process first hand. The attendees will also have the opportunity to meet with the members of the BoD.
The participants will be asked to attend the candidate reception Friday evening and the delegate forum, as well as sit in the Gallery of the Delegate Assembly on Saturday.  Participants will also be invited to participate in the NYPTA Mentoring Program. Mentoring participants will be encouraged to maintain contact throughout the year, learning and sharing experiences as they grow as leaders in their profession and the association.  
Each district can recommend one chapter funded participant or the financial equivalent. Participants are funded for their travel and half of one night’s stay at the hotel (participants are encouraged to share a room to have full funding for the room). Districts will be encouraged to send a PT, PTA, or student member to the LDW.   It is our hope that the PT and PTA participants act as delegates for the district at the Delegate Assembly and that the students stay and observe the Delegate Assembly by sitting in the Gallery.
