Course Description

This evidenced based course is intended to provide physical therapists and physical therapy assistants with a solid foundation to effectively recognize and treat vestibular disorders. The course uses a combination of lab, lecture, video demonstrations, and small group problem-solving activities to make the connection between vestibular anatomy and physiology, assessment and treatment techniques. This vestibular rehabilitation course will introduce clinicians to signs and symptoms of vestibular dysfunction, assessment techniques, and types of recovery Interventions directed toward the different types of dysfunction (e.g. otolithic, canalithic and mechanical) will be introduced and practiced.


Course Instructor

David Malamut, MA, PT


David has an MA degree in Ergonomics and Biomechanics from NYU, a BS in PT from Hunter College and a certificate in Massage Therapy from the Swedish Institute.  He also has a BA in Art and Dance from Bennington College.  He has worked as a clinical specialist in the Vestibular Service at Rusk Institute of Rehabilitative Medicine, for 21 years.  He teaches the vestibular therapy component of the DPT Program at Columbia University as well as giving numerous presentations on the subject throughout the country. In addition, he has written several articles on the topic of vestibular rehabilitation.

March 18: Vision and vestibular-ocular function assessment and treatment, special considerations, review, fall assessment review with emphasis on vestibular system in relation to balance and treatment


March 19: Types of recovery, central vs. peripheral treatment, unilateral vs. bilateral treatment, home exercise specifics, advanced vestibular treatments, motion sensitivity testing, BPPV

Course Content

·      Basic Anatomy and Physiology

·      Special VR considerations

·      Vision topics:

o   Depth perception

o   Ocular motor testing

o   Convergence testing and treatment

o   Vestibular reflexes, testing, treatment

·      Balance function, testing and treatment

·      Recovery and diagnoses

·      Central vs peripheral treatment

·      Bilateral vs unilateral treatment

·      Motion sensitivity

·      BPPV theory, assessment, treatment


Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:


  1. Identify the criteria for determining pathological signs of vestibular dysfunction (e.g. otolithic, canalithic and mechanical dysfunction) which includes pertinent patient history, examination of symptomology and sensory deficits, time frame analysis and special tests
  2. Discriminate between central and peripheral pathology
  3. Assess the extent of pathological dysfunction (unilateral vs. bilateral)
  4. Devise a treatment progression that is appropriate for a patient with vestibular dysfunction


  1. Demonstrate the ability to observe visual signs of vestibular dysfunction
  2. Display the ability to perform tests for ocular function (convergence, saccades, smooth pursuits), vestibular gaze function (head thrusts, spontaneous and gaze evoked nystagmus and head shaking nystagmus) and static/dynamic balance function
  3. Display the ability to test and treat positional vertigo
  4. Demonstrate the symptoms that a patient might experience while undergoing intervention for vestibular rehabilitation


  1. Seek opportunity for peer and instructor assessment.
  2. Internalize biopsychosocial considerations when assessing and intervening with patients with vestibular dysfunction as demonstrated through palatable and smooth evaluations and treatments.
