Evaluating and Treating Scoliosis


This course will focus on Schroth-Method examination and management of Asymmetries evidenced in Scoliosis. A brief review of clinical anatomy and Pathomechanics of Scoliosis. A discussion of the Schroth Method examination, Schroth terminology, and Classification System. The uniqueness of Schroth exercises will be highlighted, as well as a discussion of the manual interventions and therapeutic exercises for postural corrections. The clinical reasoning and the progression of framework of postural variations will be reviewed.



Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss and apply the relevant clinical anatomy and pathomechanism of the spine.
  2. Understand and explain the Schroth terminology.
  3. Review the clinical assessment in Schroth Method.
  4. Develop a plan of care using a Schroth Schematics for treatment progression.
  5. Incorporate and perform appropriate therapeutic exercises and manual therapy interventions with Schroth Method techniques.
  6. Integrate patient education strategies to develop awareness and activity modifications.
  7. Implement home exercise programs and supportive strategies to maintain spinal corrections.


Target Audience:

This course is intended for physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students with varying years of clinical experience. The concepts and principles covered will benefit all participants and enable them to translate this information immediately into clinical practice.


Instructional Methods:

A combination of lecture, demonstration, and a case study will be used during this presentation to facilitate learning and exchange of ideas.



Course Presenter: Sandra Ribeiro, PT, DPT, MSEd


Presenter Bio:

Sandra Ribeiro graduated from Hunter College in 1996 with her Bachelor of Science of Physical therapy. She earned a master’s in education with a specialty in Therapeutic Recreation in 2006 and later completed her DPT from Dominican College. She previously was an independent contractor with Westchester County, NY and has been certified in Schroth since 2012. She is currently employed at the NYC DOE and at Soaring Eagle PT clinic treating Pediatrics. As an adjunct faculty at LaGuardia Community College and Dominican College, her primary role is teaching pathophysiology and Pediatrics. She has been involved with APTA and NCTR organizations throughout her career.
