EASTERN DISTRICT SPRING elections & legislative presentation

 

Location: Russell Sage College -- Gurley Building, Room 201

Date: Wednesday, March 20, 2019

Time: 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM (30 minute break for Spring Elections)

(Participants should park in the lot on the corner of 1st & Division Street, called "Commuter Student Parking & Employee Parking." There will also be on-street parking available nearby. - Parking passes will be emailed prior to the event)

Course Title: The 2019 NYS Legislative Scene: Become an Effective Advocator for your Profession and Patients

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will introduce you to how a bill becomes a law in NYS and how NYPTA makes it easy to attend Lobby Day or a visit to your local legislator’s district office.  The legislative plan complete with a description of the bills we are supporting and opposing will be explained and you will learn who in our Eastern district sponsors the bill.  The course will include learning how a meeting is run with legislators, their staff and PT's/PTA's.  Come learn how to be a part of getting beneficial laws passed in NYS.

Course Reminders: Basic course, power point followed by role playing a visit to a legislator. Once the bills are introduced and the committees are announced the slides will be modified and they will be given as handouts. 


COURSE Objectives:

1.Understand the structure/process of how a bill becomes a law in NYS 
2. Review of NYPTA priority bills including history of past activity and plan/strategy for 2019
3. Learn how to conduct a successful local or Lobby Day meeting to educate a legislator and craft the "ask" question
4. Gain insight into past co-sponsors from Eastern district legislators and newly elected Eastern district legislators. 


 

Presenter: Doreen Frank, PT

Doreen is a 1981 graduate of Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY.  After 5 years in acute care, rehabilitation, and home care, she and her husband established Columbia Physical Therapy, PC in 1987 in East Greenbush and Valatie, NY.  After serving as the Eastern District legislative liaison in 1988, she served as Chairperson of the Legislative Committee for greater than 25 years.  She has returned to the role of Eastern District legislative liaison the last several years and she was appointed in 2017 to serve as NYS Federal Affairs Liaison to APTA.  She was awarded the APTA State Legislative Leadership Award and the NYPTA established the Doreen Frank Legislative Award of which she was the first recipient.
