Current Trends in Concussion Research and the Importance of an Interdisciplinary Concussion Management Team

Presented by: Mark Herceg, Ph.D.


Mark Herceg, Ph.D. Bio


Dr. Herceg is neuropsychologist who specializes in sports related brain injuries and mental health. He has over a 20 years career evaluating and treating individuals with various neurological changes, illnesses or brain injuries across the life spectrum. He is the Director of Concussion Center at Phelps Hospital, Northwell Health.  From 2015-17, he was also the Commissioner of  Mental Health for Westchester County, NY and during his tenure he chaired a 28 member County Concussion Task  Force that developed “10 Best Practices for Concussion Management.” This was endorsed by the Brain Injury Association of America and New York State Chapter.


Dr. Herceg has helped shape concussion management practices and increase education and awareness in Westchester County in both youth and high school sports. In 2016, BIANYS appointed him co-chair of a new state wide concussion initiative. In 2013 he authored a chapter on concussion management in the book “In the Arena” published by the NY State Bar Association. In 2017, he co-chaired the First Croatian Conference on Sports Related Brain Injuries in Split, Croatia.


Dr. Herceg holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Epidemiology and Community Health at New York Medical College.  He is also a member of the Big Ten/Ivy League TBI Research Collaboration.


Dr. Herceg sits on the Executive Board of the Sports Neuropsychology Society, is a member of the American Psychological Association, International Neuropsychology Society, and the National Academy of Neuropsychology, where he is the Chair of Social Media.


Course Objectives

Here are the 5 total objectives:


1) Be able to identify the unique roles different professionals play in diagnosis and treatment

2) Understand how concussion research and treatment has evolved 

3) Become familiar with international, national, and local trends

4) The role pre injury factors play in recovery

5) Determine when and if neurocognitive baselines are necessary
