Mind-Body Integration for Chronic Pain

Course Objectives:


1. Understand the biopsychosocial and integrative view of the pain experience and demonstrate basic proficiency in biopsychosocial-informed patient interviewing and education

2. Understand the biological basis of mind-body medicine (MBM) including in relation to chronic pain

3. Demonstrate proficiency in applying self-regulation principles rooted in breath control and body awareness for patient’s experiencing chronic pain

4. Be able to apply principles of mindfulness for improving neurocognitive, top-down inhibition processes in relation to the pain experience

5. Be able to implement simple biofeedback skills in practice as part of self-regulation training

6. Be able to implement basic mental imagery skills in practice and be able to provide patient with guided imagery resources as part of home management skills


Speaker Biography

Matt Erb, integrative physical therapist, owner of Embody Your Mind, and faculty member for The Center for Mind-Body Medicine, has a passion for helping the world understand the science of mind-body medicine, stress, and whole-person wellness. Matt’s clinical career has focused on finding better ways of working with the complexity of chronic pain and other chronic conditions such as headache, migraine, fatigue, dizziness, and conditions marked by autonomic dysregulation. He is also an international leader in developing the role of integrative physiotherapy within the larger scope of mental health care.

  • This full day course is open to PTs, PTAs, Students (students capped at 5 per course with a waiting list). ** The first 3 students for each course (total of 6) are free if they volunteer to assist with the course (arriving at 8am to help set up).
