Recognition for Developing Others

By: Stacey Zeigler, PT, DPT, GCS, NYPTA Leadership Committ

Do you know people (maybe you?) who do a terrific job of identifying and mentoring new leaders for our profession? If so, they deserve to be recognized and NYPTA plans to do just that.

The idea for an exciting new award was generated by the Leadership Committee in an effort to recognize those who have actively promoted and participated in the development of leaders for the Chapter and profession of physical therapy. In January, 2009, the NYPTA Board approved the implementation of the ‘Leadership Development Award’ with the expectation for the first award to be given at the 2010 annual meeting of the Delegate Assembly.

Recipients of this award should exemplify the spirit of leadership development within the profession through, but not limited to, the following:

Participation or promotion of mentor/protégée relationships
Participation or promotion of attendance at the Leadership Development Workshop, Delegate Assembly, Lobby Day or other association leadership activities
Creation and implementation of innovative ideas for developing leaders within the profession
Creation and implementation of methods to keep the spirit of leadership alive throughout the professional life cycle.

While nominations are not due until, March 1, 2010 it is not too early to start thinking of those you may wish to nominate or to focus your own efforts toward the achievement of this award. While nominations will follow the general award criteria of the Chapter (found at: www.nypta.org under Awards Committee), the following outlines further specifications for this particular award:

Nominations may be submitted for Districts, individuals, facilities or academic programs
Nominees should be Chapter members; in the case of facilities or academic programs, the individual spearheading the effort should be a chapter member
Nominations must be substantiated by written information including data collected regarding numbers of individuals affected by the leadership efforts; and
Members of the Chapter Leadership Committee are not eligible for this award while in office.

Nominations can be made at any time using the award nomination form found on the NYPTA website or by contacting a member of the Awards Committee for further information. We all know that leadership development is incredibly important for the future of our profession so let’s get going on identifying those leaders among us!!
