NYPTA 2013 Conference: Reaching New Heights through Research, Networking and Education
The 2013 NYPTA Physical Therapy Conference was held on October 25 and 26 at the Desmond Hotel and Conference Center in Albany. Over 300 physical therapists, physical therapist assistants and students of physical therapy were in attendance. Conference attendees had the opportunity to attend a variety of educational sessions, visit with exhibitors, view research poster presentations, and network with their peers.
Educational sessions at this year’s conference included subjects such as women’s health issues, pediatric obesity, and payment trends for private insurance and workers’ compensation. Orthopedic presentations were offered on current evidence in the management of foot and ankle conditions, rehabilitation considerations for the pre-arthritic hip, and clinical implications for psychological stress and chronic pain. Internationally renowned speakers presented on multiple subjects, including managing breathing and postural control, as well as how to promote intensity in neurological rehabilitation.
While visiting the exhibitors and NYPTA committee tables during the conference, attendees were able to partake in an Exhibitor Challenge for a chance to win five hundred dollars in cash. Friday evening featured the NYPTA Issues Forum, which gave everyone the opportunity to get the latest update from the New York Chapter on legislative issues, strategic planning and any other concerns participants voiced. Guest Speaker in attendance was Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy, who spoke on several timely and relevant topics related to the current legislative agenda for the NYPTA. A strategic plan panel discussion was followed by the presentation of student participation awards. The floor was then open to questions from participants.
Upon completion of the conference and analysis of participant evaluations, we were able to count this conference as another successful year!

“Overall an excellent experience. I attended the two Friday courses regarding insurance and Medicare Part B as well as the Pelvic Floor Dysfunction on Saturday and found all the presenters as being very well versed in their areas, engaging and interesting.”
