APTA's Student Core Ambassador for New York lead the charge to bring the #ChoosePT campaign into the national spotlight by appearing on the Today Show on September 8th. Joseph Lipsky, a DPT Student at Columbia University, has a mission to unite physical therapy students in New York State, and enlighten the public to the important work that is done by the physical therapy profession

Read his account of the experience below.

APTA and Columbia University Team up to promote the ChoosePT campaign at The Today Show

The event started when Tom Mork, the APTA Student Assembly Vice President introduced me to Amelia Sullivan, the APTA’s Senior New Media Specialist. Since September is Pain Awareness month, her goal was to come up with a way to promote the ChoosePT campaign on a national level.  She wanted to connect with me because I am the New York state Student Core Ambassador for the APTA Student Assembly and have a large reach to DPT students in New York. She then proposed the idea of gathering a group of students to go attend The Today Show with the hope of generating awareness for the ChoosePT campaign.

After talking with Amelia I was very interested in the idea and started reaching out to students to gauge interest in the event. I was able to organize over 25 DPT students from Columbia University and Hunter College come join me in our mission of promoting the ChoosePT campaign. The event was very successful and helped generate a lot of interest on social media. I think our picture with Al Roker and the one where we were caught on TV holding our ChoosePT signs were a big hit!

After reflecting on the event I realized that while this is a great way to generate awareness for the ChoosePT program, it was also an incredible opportunity for me to unite the DPT programs in New York City.

We are going to continue with this strategy of promoting the ChoosePT campaign and are planning another event - to attend the Good Morning America show, Thursday, October 6th (If you know students interested in getting involved please send them my way!) My goal is to gather over 30 students from 5 different programs in New York City to attend.
