We are excited to announce that findings are now available on the research grant that was funded by the New York Physical Therapy Association. The manuscript entitled "Utilization and Payments for Office-Based Physical Rehabilitation Services among Patients with Commercial Insurance in New York State" has been published online by the Physical Therapy Journal (PTJ) and will appear in print this month. The article can be accessed here:

The key findings from this paper are as follows:

  • First, the majority of rehabilitation services are conducted by physical therapists, which is an excellent and positive finding.
  • Second, the findings show that physical therapists in New York are being reimbursed the lowest fees for common CPT codes. However, it also shows that we have the highest skill set to perform those services and also provides data that we can use to help us move forward as a profession.
  • It should be noted that this is data is from one state, New York, in one year, 2012. That is one limitation of this particular study and, therefore, it cannot and should not be extrapolated to other parts of the country.

This is truly an exciting time for our great Chapter and I look forward to the future of our profession!

All the best,

MICHAEL MATTIA, PT, DPT, MS, MHA
President
