NYPTA’s Advisory Panel on Legislation is excited to announce a new advocacy event for this fall.Local Lobby Day is an effort to increase our presence with legislators within our shared communities before the legislative session begins and before our legislators are busy in Albany again. With stronger connections between NYPTA members and members of the legislature we can have a larger and more personal impact on our legislative priorities.

Our goal is to meet with as many legislators at the local level during the first 2-3 weeks of December. What is the benefit of local meetings?:  A local meeting with your legislator is a great opportunity to showcase your practice and the profession.  Local Lobby Day will also give legislators and NYPTA members the opportunity to be seen within local communities. Working cooperatively with the legislator’s office, we will provide draft press releases to draw in local media to report on legislators who are active in their districts and NYPTA’s High Copay efforts.

How to get involved:

  • Reach out to your district Legislative Liaison if you are interested in hosting or attending a meeting with your legislator. Meetings can be carried out in their district offices, at individual clinics or rehab departments, or even within PT/PTA academic programs. Letting your legislator choose the arena may make the meeting even more effective. Legislative Liaison contact information can be found on your district webpage at http://nypta.site-ym.com/?page=A6

Resources to become available:

  •  Updated talking points for individual bills. While the copay bill will remain the priority, members can still discuss our other current issues.
  • Press Release templates to be submitted by chapter office to alert local media of your meetings.
  • Links to APTA resources to help prepare for a local legislative meeting.

Local Lobby Day is a new opportunity to be involved in the legislative process without requiring an entire day to participate in our traditional Lobby Day. While we will continue to have a strong presence in Albany each May, this event will help us lay the groundwork for more fruitful legislative outcomes.

Be sure to contact your Legislative Liaisons or myself with any questions. Please help to us to educate our legislators on how physical therapy impacts their constituents and our patients. Thank you in advance for your continued dedication to the profession!
