Registration for Lobby Day 2017 in Albany is Open!!

This year's Lobby Day will be held on Tuesday, April 25th.  This a great opportunity to meet with our local state legislators regarding issues effecting our patients and our practice as physical therapists and physical therapist assistants.

Among the legislation we will be advocating for this year including high co-pays, the PTA and Workers' Compensation, and title protection.

Can't make the trip to Albany??  Why not lobby locally??  We are also looking for therapists to visit local legislative offices regarding our PT practice legislation.  It's a great way to stay close to home, but still be an active participant in our legislative efforts.

For additional information regarding the NYPTA 2017 legislative plan and/or to register for Lobby Day, please go to www.nypta.org and click on the Legislation tab.  You will also find the talking points regarding each piece of legislation we are presenting.  The PTA/WC and Title Protection talking points are already up, with more to be added as we get closer to Lobby Day.  The talking points can also be used for local lobbying!!

If you have any questions regarding the NYPTA Legislative Plan, Lobby Day in Albany, or lobbying locally, please do not hesitate to contact me at catzacpt@gmail.com.

Course Title: Introduction to (Biologically/Neurologically Plausible) Myofascial Release

Myofascial release (MFR) suffers from many fatal-flaws, in terms of the evidence that reportedly validates its claims/effects, as so-called fascia science is lacking. This is in sharp contrast to what is commonly stated about the work. Add to this problem obvious transgressions in emotional provocation made/encouraged beyond the acceptable scope of practice of physical therapists, it is little wonder that MFR has been of little interest to most PTs. But if one allows a version of manual therapy/engagement that resembles the work myofascial release, but uses a plausible model of neurological actions, then I believe it is sound to continue the use of the term.

The goal of this class is to offer more plausible examples of how the hands-on aspects of MFR may be acting, moving beyond a biomechanical/postural model, as well as give the therapist a chance to explore and sample the work.

  • History of myofascial release
  • Wrong turns: Effects ≠ proof/validation
  • Worse turns: Emotional/somatic expression ≠ proof that emotions stored in the fascia
  • Course correction: Neurological, autonomic, and indirect effects
  • Problems with the postural/structural/biomechanical approach
  • A simple model of touch for validated evaluation » treatment

Instructor Biography:

Walt Fritz, PT has been a physical therapist since 1985 and has been practicing myofascial release since 1992. He has worked in inpatient/outpatient settings, early intervention/school settings, developmental disabilities, home care, and has been in a solo manual therapy practice since 2000. Starting in 2006, he moved the traditional myofascial release narrative away from less-than-plausible models of energy medicine and emotional-based beliefs into more plausible models of neurological change. He teaches his Upper Body and Lower Body classes to PTs, OTs, and MTs. Since 2013 he has added a class directed toward speech-language pathologists, with focused intervention to the neck and head region. Unique features of his classes and approach are his working toward an explanatory narrative that represents current thinking and science, as well as adding a feedback-based model of explanation that includes a more patient-directed approach.
