Learn to address a range of sensory needs, interests, challenges and skills, at little or no expense, in this hands-on “Do It Yourself” toy making workshop. Each toy project presented will include discussion of rationale and uses for the toy, enabling the attendee to (1) gain a greater understanding of sensory processing challenges and how families’ lives are affected by them; (2) incorporate recommendations for simple modifications in home environment and daily routines to help families utilize toys to build targeted skills in all developmental areas including ADL; (3) empower parents in their roles as both play partners and therapeutic supporters for their children, enabling us to keep the element of fun in our interventions! All materials will be provided. Instructional Methods include powerpoint/video presentation, handouts, hands on activities, interactive discussion, Q&A. A light supper (kosher) will be provided.
DUE TO THE HANDS ON NATURE OF THE COURSE, ATTENDANCE IS LIMITED TO 40 PEOPLE.
Who Should Attend:
Special Instructors, ABA Providers, Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Social Workers and all related Early Intervention/Preschool Professionals. A basic knowledge of sensory processing dysfunction is required of attendees.
• Make low-cost and/or free materials and toys addressing sensory issues and concerns (“sensory toys”).
• Use sensory toys/materials to engage children in natural play and Activities of Daily Living.
• Integrate sensory diet activities into a child’s daily life; ie in school, home, therapy sessions and community.
• Use sensory toys to promote joint attention skills, positive behaviors and receptivity to learning.
• Mentor and coach parents/caregivers to develop sensory toy/material making skills and utilize toys/materials in their everyday interactions with their children as a means of accomplishing developmental goals and fostering enjoyable family interactions.
DENISE TADDONIO, MS ED in Special Education, Certified Autism Specialist, Licensed Play Project Consultant, has over 30 years of experience in schools and private practice teaching children and adults with special needs. She presents strategies and outcomes from her case studies as a special educator internationally, and provides professional training workshops and consultations in the NYC area. Ms Taddonia combines her belief in the power of parents with her knowledge of the power of play to help parents improve their children’s social relationship building abilities. Ms Taddonia crates custom made sensory toys for chldren under the label “Ebb and Flow” Sensory Toys. She also helps families design sendory-friendly home modifications.
ROSE A.MARCOTRIGIANO-BRUNO, MA, completed her Masters in Psychology at The Chicago School for Professional Psychology with a concentration in Child and Adolescent Psychology in 2011. She currently volunteers as a support parent through Parent to Parent of NYS, and at three different agencies providing services to families of children with special needs and mental health disorders while raising an active, adorable 5 year old son. She plans on earning a PsyD in the near future. In 2014 Rose created and presented a very informative workshop at Challenge, utilizing both her personal and professional experience, on the topic of finding and using Apps for educational and therapeutic purposes with young children..

CHALLENGE AFFILIATED THERAPISTS may register at a special rate of $90.00.
(Must be currently working with children through Challenge or have done so in the past 3 years.)
Cancellation Policy: Tuition will be refunded less a $25.00 processing fee, if written notification is received by Challenge up to two weeks prior to the seminar. Two weeks to 72 hours prior to seminar date 50% refund; 72 hours or less no refund.
