Presented by Dr. Cathleen Raggio, MD

Course Objectives:

1. To review and understand the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of hypophosphatasia (HPP)

2. Recognize how to diagnose HPP and learn the differential diagnoses

3. To be able to create an appropriate rehabilitation program for these patients

Course Description:

Children with HPP exhibit skeletal compromise that results in lifelong complications such as abnormal gait, bone and muscle/joint pain, waddling gait, muscle/joint pain, fatigue and difficulty with daily physical activities; so often times, Physical Therapists are the first to see and identify patients with HPP.   The reason for these issues stem from LOW levels of Alkaline Phosphatase and therefore they get “soft bones.”  Unfortunately it can take several years of seeing multiple specialists before a HPP diagnosis is reached as this was a previously under-recognized disease, often mistaken for Osteoporosis, Rickets, OI, etc.  A child with HPP will often seek PT first to mitigate such clinical symptoms of HPP.
