Title: Angular Joint Mobilization® - Extremity I (A New Concept of Joint Mobilization)

Course presenter: Younghoon Kim, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS

Have you ever questioned why we glide linearly on our peripheral joints (rotatory movement joints) when we perform joint mobilization?

Current joint mobilization is translatoric(linear) gliding technique performed on a rotary motion joint(movement around an axis) based on Kalternborn’s Gliding impairment theory. Professor Kalternborn's Gliding impairment theory and his Convex-Concave rule derived from MacConaill's roll-and-slide movement concept(1969).

However, This is in conflict with rigid body kinematics (Dynamics) in which roll is a combination of rotation and translation and cannot be an independent variable.

Angular Joint Mobilization® is a rotary joint mobilization technique with translatoric joint shift based on Dr. Kim’s theory “Impaired rotation with possible joint axis shift impairment” that follows joint biomechanics, and not like the traditional translatoric joint mobilization technique.

This "impaired rotation with possible joint axis shift impairment" might be from not only impaired passive subsystem(ligaments, bursas, cartilages, meniscoids, joint surfaces, joint capsules, etc.) but also from the active (muscles, tendons, etc.) and control subsystem(nerves, central nervose system).

In this class, participants will learn joint biomechanics, rigid body kinematics (Dynamics), the controversy of Roll-and-Slide movement concept, the controversy of  Kaltenborn’s Convex-Concave rule, the controversy of translatoric joint mobilization, the concept of Angular Joint Mobilization®, and application of Angular Joint Mobilization®.
