Course Description:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Institutes of Health both released position statements regarding opioid addiction in our country and have begun to take rapid action away from prescribing opioids for chronic pain. They have recommended integrated strategies of exercise therapy, nutritional intervention, and cognitive behavioral therapy. Doctors of physical therapy have an opportunity to integrate exercise therapy with evidence-based nutritional strategies to help reverse the myriad diseases that contribute to chronic pain syndromes. Integrating aspects of nutrition into practice is exciting and one that can bring additional strategies to the patients we serve and help reverse our chronic pain epidemic. Diet and nutrition are key components of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of many conditions managed by physical therapists. This session will discuss the role of the diet and nutritional strategies and their implications for musculoskeletal pain, inflammation, and disease. The speakers will describe the impact nutrition can have on physical therapist practice and rehabilitation of patients.
