Membership Meeting
July 26, 2007
- The general membership meeting was held at the Institute for Human Performance at SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY and convened at 5:15pm. Eighty-nine physical therapists, physical therapy assistants and/or student physical therapists were in attendance.
- A reception honoring WCPT President Dr. Marilyn Moffat, PT, DPT, PhD, CSCS, FAPTA was held prior to Dr. Moffat’s address. Refreshments for the event included hot and cold hors d’oeuvres and two wine selections. Sponsors for the meeting included the NYPTA Central District, the PT Education Program at SUNY Upstate Medical University and the College of Health Professions, SUNY Upstate Medical University.
- Dale Avers, PT, DPT, PhD welcomed the quests and introduced David Smith, MD President , SUNY Upstate Medical University who presented opening remarks. Patrick VanBeveren, PT, DPT, CSCS, OCS, GCS, Director, of the Physical Therapy program at St. Camillus Rehabilitation Center in Syracuse introduced Dr. Moffat.
- Dr. Moffat presented an enlightening power point presentation on fitness and the consequences of inactivity and obesity. Her presentation emphasized the important role that physical therapists have in encouraging fitness in the patients treated in the clinic. She additionally challenged therapists to include fitness screening and prescription of exercises for strength, posture, balance and flexibility for all patients treated in the clinic. Dr. Moffat additionally charged physical therapists to become leaders in their communities in the promotion of fitness.
- The physical therapy students at SUNY Upstate Medical University presented Dr. Moffat with a wine basket to thank her for her remarks to the group earlier in the day.
- After Dr. Moffat’s presentation, she was available to sign her latest book Age-Defying Fitness: Making the Most of Your Body for the rest of Your Life, which she co-authored with physical therapist Dr. Carole Lewis.
- Following Dr. Moffat’s presentation, guests were invited to speak with and meet representatives from eight different agencies participating in a job fair.
- The SUNY Upstate Medical University entry-level students coordinated a Pass-the-Hat fundraising event as an opportunity for those in attendance to donate to the Pittsburg-Marquette Challenge. Donations from this event go to fund an annual research grant in physical therapy. The students collected $4,573.00 in donations for the Challenge.
- The event adjourned at 6:00pm following Dr. Moffat’s presentation, but many attendees lingered enjoying the refreshments, connecting with other physical therapists and perusing the job fair.
