Leadership Development Workshop Attracts Participants
By: Denise Abrams, PT, Leadership Committee Chair
The Leadership Development Workshop was held on April 20, 2007 prior to Delegate Assembly. Districts were invited to identify two people to attend this exciting half-day experience. Participants are typically members who are new delegates to the Delegate Assembly.
The workshop began with a brief overview of the structure and function of the association, presented by Denise Abrams, Chairperson of the Leadership Committee. Stacey Ziegler, Leadership Committee member, assisted the participants in identifying their own leadership style, how to identify the leadership styles of others, and how to use this knowledge to work with other people. Participants were able to determine what roles within the NYPTA and APTA would best fit their leadership styles. They were then invited to complete a leadership opportunities form, indicating where they feel they would like to offer their time and leadership to the association.
The mentoring program was outlined by Colleen Backus, Leadership Committee member. Participants were invited to become a mentor or protégé, to maintain and develop their professional skills and provide networking opportunities within the association.
The afternoon concluded with a mock house of delegates, presented by Michael Pagliarulo. This interactive activity is always a huge hit with the participants, the majority of whom expressed a stronger understanding and comfort level with attending the Delegate Assembly and House of Delegates. The participants were then able to attend Delegate Assembly, either as a delegate for their district or as a guest in the gallery. It was also thrilling to see that eight of the fourteen participants from last year’s workshop returned as delegates this year! The Leadership Committee would like to thank all of the participants and presenters for another successful, stimulating and informative workshop |
