Members Mentoring Members

“A mentoring culture is a learning and development culture. It deepens the ways (members) manage their own growth and development, strengthens how they relate to one another, and facilitates organizational learning.”

Greater Washington Society of Association Executives

The Leadership Committee is excited to promote the partnership of the NYPTA and APTA for the NYPTA Mentoring Program.  This program matches mentors and protégées statewide as a member benefit for individualized guidance with practice, professional development, or increased involvement of members at the Chapter and District level.  Members mentoring members benefits all of NYPTA.

Protégées can benefit from mentoring by learning from an experienced NYPTA member who is committed to helping others grow professionally and potentially participate in leadership at the District and Chapter level of the NYPTA.

Mentors can benefit by broadening the group of invested members, increasing their own personal commitment to the organization and by sharing their own experiences with another member.

Mentors and protégées benefit from the experience through a broadened vision, access to professional networks, and development of their leadership, political, and professional skills with another physical therapist or physical therapist assistant.  This is how we create the mentoring culture, one relationship at a time.

Who are protégées and mentors?

The protégée is defined as a member who has a goal of seeking guidance in an area of professional development, such as advancement of clinical skills, activity in the NYPTA, or assistance with positive movement toward a career specialty path.

The mentor is a volunteer member who is willing to work with the protégée to help them work toward their goals by offering advice, guidance and resources the protégée may not have access to otherwise.

What is the process?

After an application has been submitted by a prospective mentor, that name is added to the mentor data base maintained by the Leadership Committee. When protégée’s applications are received, matches will be made based on the interest areas of the protégée and available mentors. Once the match has been made, protégée and mentor contact information will be shared and the participants are ready to communicate.
